Robert A. Wilson on symmetries of the ninefold square —
"All of these ideas have shown promise at some time or other, and some are still under active investigation. But my conclusion after all this work is that the part of algebra that shows the most promise for genuinely useful applications to fundamental physics is the representation theory, real, complex, integral and modular, of the group GL(2, 3). There is, of course, no guarantee that a viable theory can be built on this foundation. But it appears to be the only part of algebra that both has a reasonable chance of success and has not already been exhaustively explored in the physics literature. It is therefore worth serious consideration."

AT 95, HERMAN WOUK
PLANS HIS NEXT CHAPTER
BY LOUISA THOMAS ON 4/8/10 AT 8:00 PM EDT
. . . .
Still, Wouk, a month away from his 95th birthday, knows he cannot write forever. He has described The Language God Talks as a "summing up," even if he is toying with the idea of writing a sequel. Earnestly written and very brief, it is an unusual work—partly a quick trip through developments in cosmology, partly an episodic memoir, partly an essay on faith and science. At the end, it portrays an imagined conversation between Wouk and the scientist Richard Feynman: historical fiction about the drama of the believer and the skeptic. In real life, Wouk met Feynman while researching the atom bomb for War and Remembrance . Feynman wasn't interested in fiction; he called calculus "the language God talks." But during a summer at the Aspen Institute, the two men spent hours talking, and Wouk has been thinking about his exchanges with Feynman and other scientists ever since. He even tried to learn calculus.
Feynman was a secular Jew, and yet something about the way he saw the world resonated with the observantly religious novelist. One day Wouk came across an interview in which Feynman said, "It doesn't seem to me that this fantastically marvelous universe … can merely be a stage so that God can watch human beings struggle for good and evil—which is the view that religion has. The stage is too big for the drama." The huge stage and the human drama: "This is the subject I've been thinking about my whole life," Wouk says.

"The role of Desargues's theorem was not understood until
the Desargues configuration was discovered. For example,
the fundamental role of Desargues's theorem in the coordinatization
of synthetic projective geometry can only be understood in the light
of the Desargues configuration.
Thus, even as simple a formal statement as Desargues's theorem
is not quite what it purports to be. The statement of Desargues's theorem
pretends to be definitive, but in reality it is only the tip of an iceberg
of connections with other facts of mathematics."

Americans’ IQ scores have risen steadily over the past century.
James R. Flynn examines why.
|
No, thank you. I prefer the ninth configuration as is—
Why? See Josefine Lyche’s art installation “Grids, you say?“
Her reference there to “High White Noon” is perhaps
related to the use of that phrase in this journal.
The phrase is from a 2010 novel by Don DeLillo.
See “Point Omega,” as well as Lyche’s “Omega Point,”
in this journal.
The Wall Street Journal author above, James R. Flynn (born in 1934),
“is famous for his discovery of the Flynn effect, the continued
year-after-year increase of IQ scores in all parts of the world.”
—Wikipedia

The New York Times today on a philosopher of
history who reportedly died on Monday, March 5 —
“Perhaps White’s most controversial idea,
and one for which he was so often shunned
by his fellow historians, is that ‘all stories
are fictions,’ ” Robert Doran, a professor at
the University of Rochester … said by email.
"White held that while historical facts are
scientifically verifiable, stories are not.
Stories are made, not found in the historical data;
historical meaning is imposed on historical facts
by means of the choice of plot-type, and this choice
is inevitably ethical and political at bottom.
"This is what White called 'emplotment,' a term
he coined," Dr. Doran continued. "Even the most basic
beginning-middle-end structure of a story represents
an imposition: The historian chooses where to begin,
where to end, and what points are important in the middle.
There is no scientific test for 'historical significance.' "
From this journal on Monday, White's reported date of death —
Plan 9 continues.

“What genres do you prefer? And which do you avoid?”
“To be honest, having worked in genre for so long, I’m happiest
when I’m outside it altogether, or perhaps more accurately,
when I can conjure multiple genres all at once, in accordance
with my theory (now available, I believe, as a greeting card and
fridge magnet) that human life as we experience it is a
simultaneous multiplicity of genres. I put it much more elegantly
on the magnet.”

"…a fundamental cognitive ability known as 'fluid' intelligence: the capacity to solve novel problems, to learn, to reason, to see connections and to get to the bottom of things. …
…matrices are considered the gold standard of fluid-intelligence tests. Anyone who has taken an intelligence test has seen matrices like those used in the Raven’s: three rows, with three graphic items in each row, made up of squares, circles, dots or the like. Do the squares get larger as they move from left to right? Do the circles inside the squares fill in, changing from white to gray to black, as they go downward? One of the nine items is missing from the matrix, and the challenge is to find the underlying patterns— up, down and across— from six possible choices. Initially the solutions are readily apparent to most people, but they get progressively harder to discern. By the end of the test, most test takers are baffled."

Last night’s post discussed ways of draining the world of meaning.
For some tastes, poets like Dante do the opposite, supplying too much meaning.
See a New Republic review, dated Oct. 5, in which Harvard atheist Helen Vendler discusses Dante’s
“… assertion that Beatrice herself ‘was this number [nine],’ since nine is the square of three, the number belonging to the Trinity. Dante’s fantastic reasoning requires pages of annotation, which Frisardi, drawing on a number of commentators, furnishes to the bewildered reader. The theological elaboration of the number nine— merely one instance of how far from our own* are Dante’s habits of thought— will convince any doubting reader that the Vita Nuova requires annotation far beyond what its pages might seem to demand.”
